<p>This major release modernizes the CipherMail Email Encryption Gateway from the ground up. By moving to a React front end, a Spring Boot back end with a REST API, and a comprehensive CLI, the system is easier to use, automate, and integrate. The new back-end authorization model ensures consistent and precise access control across all interfaces. While the changes require a migration rather than an in-place upgrade, they lay a solid foundation for future improvements and long-term support. <p>Today we are releasing a new major version (v6) of the CipherMail Email Encryption Gateway. This is a significant update that delivers many new features, modernizes the technology stack, and improves reliability and maintainability. It has been developed over the past few years.</p> <h2>Why a major update was needed</h2> <p>The previous version had accumulated technical debt. It depended on libraries that were only supported on older Java versions (Java 11 or lower) and used technologies that were state-of-the-art in 2008 but no longer meet current best practices. For example, the front end and back end communicated via SOAP, whereas REST is the modern standard. Some libraries were no longer maintained and required extensive workarounds to keep them functioning with newer Java releases. A major rewrite was therefore necessary to ensure long-term supportability and to take advantage of modern frameworks and tooling.</p> <h2>What’s new in this release</h2> <p>The user interface has been rebuilt. The Java-based front end has been replaced with a React-based front end for a more responsive and maintainable experience.</p> <p>The back end now runs on Spring Boot and exposes a REST API. The React front end communicates with the back end over this API. This separation makes the system easier to scale, integrate, and automate.</p> <p>A complete command-line interface (CLI) is now available. With the CLI, you can fully manage the gateway from the shell. This enables automated installation, configuration, and day-to-day administration using scripts and configuration management tools.</p> <p><img alt="Ansible logo" src="https://www.ciphermail.com/images/ciphermail-cli.svg"></p> <p>Authorization has moved to the back end with a highly granular permission model. Previously, permissions were enforced in the Java-based front end, which made it impossible to apply the same model to the CLI. In the new release, all authorization is handled centrally by the back end. The permission model is very fine grained, with approximately 1,700 distinct permissions. Each property has separate read and write permissions at user, domain, and global levels. Every REST operation requires the appropriate permission. This ensures consistent, least-privilege access across the web UI, the CLI, and any integrations.</p> <h2>Availability</h2> <p>The professional edition of the CipherMail Email Encryption Gateway has been running in production for some time. We are now making the open-source community edition publicly available as well. The community edition can be found on our public GitLab repository, where you can access the source code, RPM/DEB packages, and virtual appliances.</p> <h2>Upgrading from the previous version</h2> <p>This release includes breaking changes, including changes to the database schema and system internals. As a result, in-place upgrades from the previous version are not supported.</p> <p>To move to the new version, install it as a fresh deployment and then migrate your data. You can export certificates and keys from your existing installation and import them into the new one. Plan the migration to include configuration, policies, users, and any integrations. <p>We use the open source DebOps software to manage our IT infrastructure. Today we are giving something back.</p>

<center>{ width=250px }</center> <p>We like free and open source software. Our products are built on top of open source software, and CipherMail Gateway has a community version that's released under the GNU AGPLv3 license. But we are not just putting open source in our products, the IT infrastructure that powers almost every aspect of our company also greatly utilizes open source software. Our servers run the completely free <a href="https://www.debian.org/">Debian GNU/Linux</a> operating system, and are powered by the <a href="https://www.qemu.org/">QEMU</a> virtualization and <a href="http://www.ganeti.org/">Ganeti</a> cluster management software.</p> <p>Managing these 40+ servers is no simple task for a human being, and doing this by hand would make my job as a system administrator stressful and repetitive. So instead we are making use of Red Hat's Ansible IT automation engine to manage our servers, and I just tell Ansible how it should manage them.</p> <p>That last part is where <a href="https://docs.debops.org/en/master/">DebOps</a> comes in. DebOps is a collection of Ansible roles and playbooks, essentially a set of highly configurable rules for Ansible, that we employ to manage our servers with. The power of DebOps can be found in its deep integration between roles, each of which is responsible for managing a logical system component. This makes it comparatively easy to set up and maintain one or more clusters of servers that provide a common service. See for example our email infrastructure, which is described in detail in <a href="https://www.ciphermail.com/blog/eating-our-own-dog-food.html">this blog post</a>.</p> <p>DebOps is not just a software project, it is also a group of dedicated volunteers who work together to make it a success. The founder and lead developer, <a href="https://drybjed.net/">Maciej Delmanowski</a>, decided early on that DebOps should be usable for more people than just himself and released the source code under the GNU GPLv3 license. Almost 15 000 commits later, DebOps is now a truly fantastic piece of work whose benefits are shared amongst system administrators and self-hosting enthousiasts alike.</p> <p>Given our fondness of open source software, CipherMail's grateful use of DebOps and the fact that DebOps contributor <a href="https://www.qwertyuiopia.com/">Tasos Alvas</a> recently made an awesome new logo (see above) for the project, we decided to do something that would strengthen this community. We've been contributing bug fixes and new features for quite a while, but felt that now is the perfect time to show how proud we are of the progress we've made together these past years. And what's a better way than wearing part of that progress as a t-shirt?</p> <p>Fourteen of <a href="https://twitter.com/CipherMail/status/1349707201531797507">these shirts</a> will be shipped to developers all over Europe. <p>We have updated our <a href="https://www.ciphermail.com/privacy-policy.html">privacy policy</a> today. The two significant changes are the extension of the data retention period for backups from 60 to 90 days, and the reduction of the raw analytics retention period from 10 to 7 days.</p> <p>The new backup retention period of 90 days is necessary to ensure that we can adequately protect our data, which is in our legitimate interest. We now believe that 60 days is on the short side if we want to protect ourselves from, for example, ransomware. We see 90 days as an acceptable trade-off between the risk of data loss and the privacy impact of the individuals whose data we process in these backups.</p> <p>It should be noted that only the absolutely required personnel at CipherMail has access to these backups. They are only accessed as a last resort in case of a data loss event. We do not provide these backups to third parties. <p>Multiple issues were discovered in CipherMail Community Gateway and Professional/Enterprise Gateway versions 1.0.1 through 4.7.1, and Webmail Messenger 1.1.1 through 3.1.1. These vulnerabilities have been fixed in CipherMail Community Gateway and Professional/Enterprise Gateway 4.8.0 and Webmail Messenger 3.2.0. You may or may not be affected by these issues depending on your use of the CipherMail software. We recommend that you update your CipherMail installations, or apply the minimal patches provided through the website and support portal.</p> <h2>CVE-2020-12713: Incorrect Access Control</h2> <p>Core Security discovered that it is possible to escalate privileges from the web interface, when authenticated as an administrative user with the 'ROLE_ADMIN' role. The affected components are the Postfix main.cf configuration editor (allowing escalation to the local root account) and the backup restore functionality (allowing escalation to the local djigzo account).</p> <p>CipherMail Gateway 4.8.0 and Webmail Messenger 3.2.0 fix this vulnerability by validating the main.cf input and asking for the 'sa' system password before restoring a backup. The minimal patch also adds validation of the main.cf input, but completely disables the backup restore functionality in the web interface. Restoring from the command line is still possible.</p> <h2>CVE-2020-12714: Inadequate Encryption Strength</h2> <p>We discovered that the default Postfix configuration of CipherMail virtual appliances contains a weak Diffie-Hellman parameter. This could compromise communications between SMTP clients and CipherMail products. The vulnerability should only be an issue in case you rely on TLS for security of inter-mailserver SMTP traffic (for example, with DANE and STARTTLS).</p> <p>CipherMail Gateway 4.8.0 and Webmail Messenger 3.2.0 fix this vulnerability by configuring Postfix to use a stronger Diffie-Hellman parameter.
